City of Athens at night with moon

Athens is the capital of Western Civilization and the birthplace of democracy. It is in this city that events unfolded many centuries ago, which changed the course of the world. It is one of the oldest cities in the world with a recorded history of more than 3,400 years.

We were backpacking through southeastern Europe when we seized upon the opportunity to visit one of the most important cities in the history of human civilization. Athens has witnessed many civilizations of the world rise from the dust and then disappear for good. It is witness to the great philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Their reflections and thoughts have influenced the intellectual course of our civilizations for centuries.

We wanted to spend enough time in the city so that we could explore the treasure of our ancient civilization. We found a reasonable hotel near the Benaki Museum. Athens is a major tourist destination so we could easily find the restaurants and food of our taste. However, the traditional food of Greece has its special taste. We relished ourselves with the dish of Barbouni and Gyro.

Exploring ancient treasure in the Museums of Athens

The capital city of Greece has made extraordinary efforts to preserve its rich traditions of art and philosophy. There are scores of museums located all over the city, which are a major source of tourist attraction. We had already researched the most popular and significant museums in the city to visit. Since we were living close to the Benaki Museum so this was the first place we visited. It displays art pieces of ancient civilizations.

Secondly, we went to the National Archeological Museum, which is one of the most valuable all over the world. It displays ancient artifacts and antiques covering more than 5,000 years of our civilization. We visited the famous museum of Acropolis, which recently replaced the ancient museum of Acropolis. We spent quite a few days visiting the popular museums of the city and capturing them in our memory to relish them for years.

The spell bounding architecture of the city of Athens

When it comes to Athens almost every aspect of the city is trying to overshadow the other. The ancient architecture of the city is one of the most precious treasures of the city, which casts light on how we came where we are today. All over the city, there are historical sites with some history associated with them.

We first visited the Acropolis of Athens on the hilltop, which gives an account of the 5th Century civilization of the city. It is now undergoing restoration, as it is an important heritage site. Next, we went to the Parthenon archaeological site. It is the remaining ruins of the 5th-century Athenian temple. There is the temple of Olympian Zeus, which gives the historical accounts of the Greek god.

After a few days visiting the historical ruins of the ancient civilizations, we decided to go to more recent and modern sites in the city. Today, Athens has evolved into a major financial and academic hub for Greece providing much-needed support to the economy of the country.

Athens is a historical city with many things to see and respect from its ancient past.
